On August 24, Wayne Anthony Gunnar James, a former U.S. Virgin Island Senator who served as the Chair of the Senate Committee on Youth, Education and Culture from 2009 to 2011, was extradited from Italy on charges of defrauding the government of the Virgin Islands.  As Chair of the Senate Committee on Youth, Education and Culture, James allegedly submitted false documents to the legislature in order to receive cash advances, which he then embezzled for his personal use.  The purported purpose of the cash advances were to assist in the project in which was acquiring and translating historical documents related a 1878 uprising by freed slaves in St. Croix.  James was indicted on October 1, 2015 and then arrested in Modena, Italy on June 29, 2016.  United States v.
